The 3 Corners of Buenos Aires for a Countryside Getaway to Recharge Your Energy
Although many may not know it, near the City of Buenos Aires there are picturesque corners that seem taken from a postcard. With quiet streets, historic buildings, and traditional culinary offerings, these destinations provide the best weekend getaway.
Those travelers seeking a unique experience without having to leave the country can find options filled with green spaces and cultural attractions. Currently, these three towns in Buenos Aires offer activities for all ages and provide the best of rural tourism.
Uribelarrea
Located in the Cañuelas district, Uribelarrea is 85 kilometers from the City of Buenos Aires and is one of the most chosen spots in the province. Its agricultural history, dirt roads, and century-old architecture have given it an aesthetic that has also captivated filmmakers, as several national and international productions have chosen to film in its streets.
Its main point of interest is the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Luján, inaugurated in 1890 and designed by architect Pedro Benoit, who was also responsible for the urban layout of La Plata. In front of the temple is the main square, another of the most visited places by those arriving in the town. For those looking for artisanal products, within the Salesian Agricultural School Don Bosco, founded in 1894, cheeses and dulce de leche are produced.
Among its offerings, the following stand out:
- Artisan Fair with regional products, sausages, preserves, and leather and wood crafts
- Museum of Machines and Tools Leopoldo Rizzi, housed in an old railway warehouse
- Country restaurants with wood-fired barbecues, abundant picadas, and craft beer
To get there by car, take the Riccheri Highway, follow the road along the Ezeiza-Cañuelas Highway, and then continue on National Route 205 until kilometer 82.5.
San Vicente
Just 51 kilometers from the City of Buenos Aires, San Vicente boasts a rich historical heritage and green corners perfect for those needing to escape the city for a few days. One of its main attractions is the San Vicente Lagoon Reserve, a body of water covering 180 hectares that is ideal for walks, picnics, and various recreational activities.
The most emblematic place in the district is the Quinta 17 de Octubre, now the 17 de Octubre Historical Museum. The site was the residence of Juan Domingo Perón, where his remains are preserved and it has been declared a National Historical Site. The complex also features 18 hectares of parkland and includes:
- The old chalet converted into a museum
- Permanent and temporary exhibition halls
- A replica of a railway station
- The presidential train used by various Argentine leaders
The city also invites visitors to explore the old railway station, the House of the Payadores, and the entrepreneur fairs that are often organized on weekends. Those traveling by car can access it via the Riccheri Highway and Provincial Route 58. It is also reachable by the Roca Line to Alejandro Korn station and then continue to the center of San Vicente.
Villa Lía
Within the San Antonio de Areco district lies Villa Lía, a small town located 127 kilometers from the Obelisk. It has 1,200 inhabitants, and only one of its streets is paved. Known as the "Immigrant Town", it keeps alive many customs from families that arrived from Europe and contributed to its growth.
As tourists walk through its streets, they can discover ancient buildings, historic stores, and unique corners. Among the places most recommended by those familiar with the locality are the traditional general stores. The most well-known are:
- Pascual's Store
- Caunedo's Store
Both offer typical countryside dishes and homemade empanadas to enjoy. Another must-see is the Museum and Cultural Center Los Rostros de la Pampa, where old photographs, rural tools, and objects belonging to the founding families of the town are exhibited. The Casa Bella Vista is another unmissable point, built in 1928 and chosen as the setting for the movie "Imagining Argentina", starring Antonio Banderas.
